Software RAID in Linux with mdadm

I run a RAID 1 (mirroring) with 2 disks. Cheap and simple. (And I don't have to fuck around with RAID card support under Linux.)

I just had 1 disk fail, so I'm about to replace it:
Hold on to your asses everyone. Reminder to self: pull the right disk.

[Edit: Success!]

  1. Notes from the second time I did this:

Beware newer drives which have larger (4k) physical sector sizes. You can still set logical sector sizes to 512 bytes, but there are some performance penalties.

(Western Digital has a PDF talking about the larger sector sizes here . I haven't read through it. Hopefully it will quantify the performance penalties. I don't know how much I should care.)
